Take Payment terminal

Generate a single-use QR code for an exact amount and take a payment face to face — no card machine required.

What it is

Your regular payment page and QR code are always the same — one link, no amount attached, meant to be printed or displayed permanently. The Take Payment terminal is different: you type in an amount and a reference for one specific sale, and Manuka Pay generates a brand-new QR code just for that transaction. Show it to the customer standing in front of you, like handing over a card machine. Once they've paid, that code is done — it can't be reused.

It's still just a QR code — there's no hardware to buy, lease, or carry. The customer scans it with their own phone camera and pays the same way they would on your regular payment page.

Turning it on

Take Payment ships on by default for every merchant. If it's ever off, go to Settings and switch on the Take Payment toggle, underneath "Accept payments". Once it's on, a Payment Terminal link appears in your dashboard's menu, and a Use Payment Terminal button appears next to Show QR / Print QR code on your dashboard.

Generating a code

1

Open Payment Terminal from your dashboard or the menu.

2

Click "Generate QR Code" — a short form drops down for Amount and Reference.

3

Enter the amount and a short reference (a customer name, order number, or job description — this shows up against the sale in your Transactions list).

4

Click "Generate QR Code" again to confirm. A large QR code appears — turn your screen around and show it to the customer.

While the customer pays

The customer scans the code with their phone, which opens a payment page pre-filled with the exact amount — they can't change it. They pay by card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay, the same as your regular payment page.

Your screen checks for a result automatically every few seconds — you don't need to refresh or do anything. The moment the payment succeeds, the QR code is replaced with a confirmation showing the amount paid, your reference, and a payment reference to compare against what the customer sees on their own screen.

You can cancel a code any time before it's paid — useful if the customer changes their mind. Nothing is charged until they complete the payment.

If the card is declined

Your customer can try a different card on the same code — they don't need a new QR code just because the first card didn't work. Your screen keeps watching for a result the whole time, so if their retry succeeds, it updates automatically without you doing anything.

If the customer has given up, or the code has genuinely failed, generate a new code for the same sale from that screen. Their payment page will tell them to ask you for a new QR code if their session can no longer be used.

Expiry

A code that's never scanned expires on its own after a few minutes, since it's meant for an immediate, in-person moment — not something to leave sitting around. Once it expires, you'll see an "Expired" message with the option to generate a fresh one for the same sale.

Frequently asked questions
